Concise SummaryToday, many high school graduates have neither the aptitude nor the desire nor the interest in earning a College Degree. Their interests, talent and skills do not align with higher education. There are many careers available which can be accessed with anywhere from 6 months to 2 years of specialized instruction in a Technical College.
The last thing we need in Utah is to allow Technical Colleges to morph into precisely what many students wish to avoid.
The recent merging the governing boards of traditional Colleges and Universities with Technical Colleges is fraught with dangers. Today, traditional University Education is being widely replaced by Technical Education, including traditional Vocations such as Plumbers and Electricians. Combining these two creates the real possibility the unique needs of Tech Colleges will be subsumed by the massive programs of Higher Education. The emerging roles of Technical Education need to be protected and nourished.
